WHAT IS CASTLE ANAM
CARA?
In 1996, David O'Connor (Lord Duncan) and
Loretta Salazar (Lady Espringale) began an adventure. The goal was to create a
place so special that it puts the heart and spirit at ease, fosters the
creativity within, gives sanctuary from the modern world, welcomes ALL
people and makes history come alive. A tall order. But the result is CASTLE ANAM
CARA. Designed and built entirely by hand by David and Loretta it is an ever
evolving re-creation of a 10th - 11th century castle keep. The Castle's
ancient wooden beams, wooden floors, stone and wrought iron all lighted with the
glow of beeswax candles magically transport the visitor through a time portal.
Castle Anam Cara is not only a beautiful place
visually it is also the real expression of both David and Loretta's shared
philosophy - simplicity of life, a strong physical connection with their
environment, self responsibility, self sufficiency, a strong sense of community
and standing up for what they believe in. David and Loretta are strongly
committed to walking gently upon the earth, consuming minimal resources and
recycling. They cook and heat with wood, use solar collectors
as supplemental heating, grow most of their own food, pump much of their
water out of the well by hand, collect rain water for garden irrigation and buy
local goods and produce.
Although David and Loretta were groomed in the halls
of higher education (David is a graduate of Dartmouth College) they
have made the commitment to make their living from their artistic and
creative skills. For them the WAY they make their living is more important than
the amount of money they make. They vowed years ago to never go to bed feeling
like they had taken advantage of another human being in pursuit of their own
financial gain. Society does not make this the easiest path to choose!
David is a noted goldsmith and silversmith with over
25 years of experience. In keeping with the lifestyle they have chosen David is
well known for his ancient artifact jewelry creations. People are thrilled when
they put on an actual piece of history - Roman coin jewelry, Greek coin jewelry,
Medieval artifact jewelry. Each piece of ancient artifact jewelry is hand made
by David in the Castle metal shop. Every piece of jewelry - whether Roman coin
jewelry or 3000 year old Egyptian artifact jewelry - is made form a certified
artifact that can be returned to display condition at any time. David is also
committed to the true spirit that has bound the artisan community throughout the
ages - the highest quality work, honestry and a desire to give the customer what
he or she really wants.
In addition to beautiful Roman coin jewelry and
ancient artifact jewelry David brings forth some other creative surprises that
will hopefully inspire you a little as you wander through this site. You will
also see some of the talents of Loretta - Lady Espringale' - as you wander. Her
family of marionettes and puppets along with her story telling skills have
thrilled children and adults throughout the kingdom. Between the smiles she
brings to her audiences and the love she fills the walls of Castle Anam Cara
with she has become a ray of sunshine throughout the land.
Built on eight rocky acres in Barrington, New
Hampshire Castle Anam Cara has become a noted living history
destination for people of all ages. It is also a friendly resource for
those interested in a lifestyle that emphasizes simplicity and self sufficiency.
